Can I view a GeoTIFF online without uploading it?

What is a Cloud Optimized GeoTIFF, and do I need one?
A Cloud Optimized GeoTIFF (COG) is a GeoTIFF organised internally so that a client can read just the part it needs over HTTP, instead of downloading the whole file. You do not need one for a small local file, but it is what makes very large rasters usable in a browser or over a network. If an in-browser viewer refuses a large .tif, converting it to COG is usually the right fix.
Is GeoTIFF a standard?
Yes. GeoTIFF is an Open Geospatial Consortium standard that specifies how to use the Tagged Image File Format to exchange georeferenced imagery; the current version is GeoTIFF 1.1. That is why the same .tif opens across QGIS, GDAL, ArcGIS and browser-based viewers rather than being locked to one vendor.
Why does my GeoTIFF look black or blank?
Usually the display stretch, not the file. Many scientific rasters store values across a range far wider than what is actually present — reflectance scaled to 10,000, for example, in a scene whose values sit under 2,000 — so a viewer using the full theoretical range renders almost everything as black. Applying a stretch based on the actual value distribution normally fixes it. Missing or unexpected CRS information is the other common cause.
