Why a hotspot is not the same as a fire

A fire map shows thermal detections: pixels where a sensor measured enough heat to trigger the algorithm. That is a strong signal and a weak description. It does not tell you the extent of the burn, whether the source is a wildfire or a gas flare, or what was lost.

Getting the authoritative detections — and the download or alert feed behind them — straight from the source.
Limitation:
It gives you thermal hotspots, not context: no high-resolution imagery of the burn itself and no explanation of what is around it.

How fast is satellite fire detection?
NASA FIRMS makes near-real-time detections available within about three hours of the satellite observation globally. For the United States and Canada there are faster options: real-time data within 30 minutes of overpass, and ultra-real-time data within five minutes for selected direct readout stations. Maps that redistribute FIRMS inherit its latency and often add their own, so check the cadence rather than assuming "live" means instant.
What is the difference between VIIRS and MODIS fire detections?
Resolution and age. VIIRS active fire detections are delivered at 375 m nominal resolution and pick up smaller fires; MODIS detections are about 1 km. MODIS, on Terra and Aqua, has the longer record — useful when you need history — while VIIRS, on S-NPP, NOAA-20 and NOAA-21, is the finer instrument for current events. Why does a hotspot not always mean a wildfire?
Thermal sensors detect heat, not fire type.
