Why a hotspot is not the same as a fire
A fire map shows thermal detections: pixels where a sensor measured enough heat to trigger the algorithm. That is a strong signal and a weak description. It does not tell you the extent of the burn, whether the source is a wildfire or a gas flare, or what was lost.
Detection
A thermal sensor flags a hot pixel — 375 m for VIIRS, about 1 km for MODIS. Fast and global, but a point, not a perimeter.
Confirmation
10 m optical imagery shows the burn scar; SAR sees through the smoke and cloud that usually cover a fire in its first days.
Context
What is nearby, who reported it, and whether it matters — the part a hotspot layer leaves entirely to you.

Best as the source of the detections themselves
NASA’s Fire Information for Resource Management System distributes near-real-time active fire detections from MODIS (Terra and Aqua) and VIIRS (S-NPP, NOAA-20 and NOAA-21), as an online map, email alerts and downloads.

- Getting the authoritative detections — and the download or alert feed behind them — straight from the source.
- Limitation:
- It gives you thermal hotspots, not context: no high-resolution imagery of the burn itself and no explanation of what is around it.
NASA Worldview
Best for smoke, aerosol and large-area context
A free NASA web app that browses, compares and animates over 1,000 imagery layers, often within hours of overpass — thermal anomalies alongside smoke, aerosol and true-colour layers.
- Best for:
- Seeing the fire in context: where the smoke is going and how the event looks at regional scale.
- Limitation:
- Coarse resolution — hundreds of metres — so it shows the plume and the region, not the fire line.
EFFIS (Copernicus EMS)
Best for Europe, with fire danger forecasts and burnt-area mapping
The European Forest Fire Information System, run by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre as part of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service. Beyond hot spots it publishes fire perimeters, fire-danger forecasts and post-fire damage assessment.

- European, Middle Eastern and North African fires, and for the forecast side — what the danger looks like over the coming days.

- Regional by design: it does not cover fires outside its European, Middle Eastern and North African mandate.
