How precisely events could be placed

Each event is placed only as precisely as the reporting allows: reported (country or province), localized (town or city), pinpointed (street block or facility). 5,365 records (17%) were judged something a satellite could check.

How these numbers are counted

  • One record is one event: reports of the same event are folded into one, so the counts are of events, not articles.
  • An event belongs to the month it was first reported in (UTC), even if reporting continued afterwards.
  • Records that were folded into another, withdrawn, or are a part of a larger event are not counted separately.
  • The counts measure what was recorded. Coverage depends on which sources are read, and sources were added during the month, so a rise from one month to the next is not by itself evidence that more happened. The sources are listed on Data Sources, and each step is described on Methodology.
  • Refreshed daily. Folding reports together or withdrawing an event can still move a number slightly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many world events were recorded in October 2026?▼
30,806 event records were first reported in October 2026 (2026-10-01 to 2026-10-31, UTC). Each record folds the reports of one event into one, so this counts events, not articles. It is a count of what was recorded, not of everything that happened: coverage depends on which sources are read, and sources were added during the month.
Why are events counted by the day they were first reported?▼
So that a past month keeps its numbers. An event that is reported again the next month stays in the month it was first reported. The counts can still move slightly when reports are folded together or an event is withdrawn; the page is refreshed daily.
What do reported, localized and pinpointed mean?▼
How precisely an event could be placed from what the reporting names: reported is a country or province, localized a town or city, pinpointed a street block or facility. An event is placed only as precisely as the reporting allows.
Can I get these events, not just the counts?▼
Yes. The Watchfloor lists them with their sources, and the same records are available through the REST API, the Python SDK and the MCP server. How far back you can browse depends on the plan: the free plan shows the last few days, paid plans a longer history.
