Summary

A US Marine stationed on Okinawa was arrested on suspicion of murdering and robbing a local woman. According to reports, Lance Corporal Devin Jacob Ballard, 20, is suspected of killing Anna Yagi, 39, in a hotel in Naha on Saturday and taking her wallet and backpack; Ballard denied the allegations, police said. In response, US soldiers on Okinawa have been given a month-long curfew and banned from drinking alcohol while undergoing discipline training. All US military operations on Okinawa will be paused for 48 hours for training on standards and discipline. The incident has sparked protests and raised concerns over the US troop presence on the island chain near Taiwan and China. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi condemned the alleged killing as a 'heinous crime' and demanded tougher discipline and preventive measures.
