Summary

Two men died and two women suffered severe burns during a migrant crossing attempt in the English Channel off the coast of Berck, France, on the night of October 5-6, 2026. A boat carrying approximately 120 people encountered problems, with rescuers finding the vessel taking on water and bailing it out with shoes when they arrived. The two women, identified as Somali nationals aged 20 and 26, were hospitalized with burns covering large areas of their bodies. The two men, aged in their 30s and 40s, were in cardiac arrest when rescue services arrived and died around midnight. Reports attribute the burns to a chemical reaction involving gasoline and seawater, though one account mentions a fire caused by a leak in the outboard motor. Approximately 20 migrants were left stranded and unable to board the vessel. The Boulogne-sur-Mer public prosecutor's office opened an investigation into the circumstances of the deaths. This incident brings the total number of migrant deaths at the Franco-British maritime border to at least 24 since the start of 2026.
