Summary

A stampede occurred at the Niger State Government House in Minna during a gathering of youths. Reports indicate the incident was triggered by a rush for money allegedly being distributed by or on behalf of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, with some sources citing rumors of ₦10,000 per person distributions. Casualty figures vary across accounts: some reports cite at least five deaths feared, while others confirm three deaths. Among the identified deceased were a woman named Dije and her daughter Hurairat (also spelled Hulaira), both internally displaced persons from Allawa community in Shiroro Local Government Area, and in one account, Maryam Haruna Yakubu, a casual staff member. Multiple reports note several others were injured and received treatment at Minna General Hospital. The gathering was reportedly connected to efforts by government officials to engage youths planning a protest over recent deaths of 37 artisanal miners. Sources at the Government House expressed concern about the large crowd and lack of crowd control arrangements. As of the reports' publication times, neither the state government nor the governor's office had issued official statements, and independent confirmation of casualty figures remained unavailable.
