Summary

Reports describe a sinkhole that opened in September near actor Nicolas Cage's beachfront Malibu, California home, damaging his driveway and an access road and leaving the house uninhabitable, so Cage and his family have stayed in hotels. Accounts say the sinkhole was linked to heavy rain, coastal erosion, and flooding from a storm, and that it caused a gas pipeline concern and evacuation orders for about 31 neighboring properties, with the City of Malibu declaring a local emergency. Reports differ on the sinkhole's size, the number of homes deemed unsafe, and its exact cause. Repairs and permits are underway, with the timeline for residents' return uncertain. The reports' statements have not been confirmed by officials.
