Summary

A scrub fire in Roxburgh East, central Otago, forced the evacuation of six homes and led to power disconnections affecting over 220 customers during severe Labour Day weather on October 26, 2026. Strong winds initially prevented aerial firefighting operations, though ground crews were able to assist until darkness fell. Overnight rain and calmer conditions the following day aided firefighting efforts. Fire and Emergency New Zealand confirmed completion of fire operations, with no properties damaged and power fully restored. The fire occurred amid a broader pattern of vegetation fires across Otago and Southland driven by severe weather conditions.
