Summary

On September 27, 2026, the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Southern Theater Command conducted a joint naval-air exercise in the waters and airspace around Huangyan Dao in the South China Sea. Simultaneously, the China Coast Guard conducted drills focusing on maritime rights protection, law enforcement, and management and control in the same area. The exercises involved assets including the Type 908 replenishment ship Qinghaihu and the WZ-7 reconnaissance drone. According to Chinese sources, the exercises aimed to test and enhance combat capabilities to safeguard China's territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests. Multiple reports characterize the drills as a response to actions by certain countries that have undermined regional peace and stability, with some sources specifically identifying the Philippines as the target. The exercises included reconnaissance, rapid maneuvers, search and rescue, boarding and inspection, and interdiction operations, demonstrating integrated three-dimensional capabilities.
