Summary

The Philippine Coast Guard deployed its largest vessel, BRP Teresa Magbanua, and an aircraft to challenge the Chinese research vessel Jia Hai Ke 7 operating in the Philippine exclusive economic zone off Batanes province beginning September 28, 2026. The PCG accused the vessel of conducting unauthorized marine scientific research and spoofing its Automatic Identification System. The vessel held position approximately 37-38 nautical miles northwest of Itbayat for four days before being driven from the area following repeated radio challenges and assertive maneuvering. A China Coast Guard vessel arrived to shield the research ship. The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs stated no consent was given for Chinese marine scientific research in the area and characterized the PCG response as lawful law enforcement. China's embassy rejected this account, claiming the vessel was conducting normal operations in waters under Chinese jurisdiction and accused Philippine authorities of harassment.
