Summary

Multiple opposition parties and the Cockroach Janta Party organized protests in October 2026 demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, citing concerns about the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and alleged irregularities. Delhi Police reported receiving complaints from three female journalists alleging sexual harassment during a protest at Jantar Mantar on October 3. The complaints were referred to the Crime Branch for investigation. Opposition leaders including Rahul Gandhi participated in protests and were detained by police; Gandhi was seen offering water to police during detention. A standoff and continued sit-in occurred when opposition leaders were blocked from entering the Election Commission office. The Chief Election Commissioner, government officials Sudhanshu Trivedi and Sambit Patra, and other authorities have denied the allegations of misconduct. The identity of the journalists and specific nature of the complaints have not been disclosed, and the allegations against the Election Commission and police have not been independently established. Protests occurred in multiple cities including Delhi and Mumbai, with some demonstrations proceeding despite police denying permission.
