Summary

A joint security operation by the Nigerian Army, Department of State Services, and Western Nigeria Security Network (Amotekun) killed Abdussamad Ohida, a senior commander of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), in Owo forest, Ondo State. The operation, reportedly aided by UK intelligence partners, occurred on 4 October 2026 and was confirmed on 5 October. Ohida, also known as Anwar, was reportedly planning coordinated terrorist attacks in southern Nigeria during the festive period and ahead of the 2027 general elections. He had previously served as deputy to ISWAP leader Abu Ikrimah before assuming leadership of ISWAP operations in central and southern regions. Ohida was linked to several attacks including the December 2025 invasion of Ipele Divisional Police Station in Owo, where eight rifles were stolen, and attacks on military and naval checkpoints. Several other ISWAP members were reportedly killed alongside him. Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa commended the security agencies, describing the operation as a major security breakthrough resulting from credible intelligence and inter-agency cooperation.
