Summary
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) FCT Council declared an indefinite strike beginning October 7, 2026, over unresolved disputes concerning teachers' promotions and welfare in the Federal Capital Territory. The NLC demands removal of the vacancy precondition for teacher promotion, reconsideration of eligible teachers for promotion exams, and withdrawal of redeployment and demotion letters for directors. The strike has led to closures of schools, hospitals, and government offices across the FCT. Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike denied the strike's legitimacy, claiming the FCT Administration had substantially resolved or was actively implementing all legitimate demands and characterizing the action as politically motivated. Wike ordered enforcement of a no-work, no-pay policy against participating workers. The organized labour movement split over the strike: the Trade Union Congress instructed its members to ignore it and report for work, citing lack of consultation, while the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees supported the action.
