Summary

Multiple vessels reported being struck or attacked in separate incidents across two maritime regions in late September and early October 2026. In the Strait of Hormuz, a crude oil tanker and at least two additional vessels were reportedly struck by unknown projectiles, with one incident causing a fire that was later extinguished; the UK Maritime Trade Operations did not confirm these reports. A tanker captain in the strait reported seeing a blast and fire ahead of his vessel and contacted the US Navy. In the Black Sea off Russia's coast near Sochi, the Liberian-flagged tanker Aframax Rio with 23 Indian crew members was attacked by unmanned surface vessels or naval drones on October 6, 2026. Footage showed intense orange flames and dense black smoke from the resulting fire; Russia's transport ministry confirmed crude oil was burning openly in the Black Sea waters. All 23 crew members were rescued with no injuries reported. The intensity of the fire initially prevented firefighting efforts. Access to Sochi's beaches was temporarily restricted. Ukraine has claimed responsibility for the Black Sea attack as part of ongoing maritime conflict with Russia, though Ukraine has not claimed the Strait of Hormuz incidents. The cause of a separate explosion near a vessel off Yemen on October 5 remained under investigation.
