Summary

Malaysia began deporting approximately 1,476 Myanmar nationals on September 29, 2026, as the first phase of a broader repatriation program potentially involving up to 5,000 people. The deportees were transported via Myanmar naval vessels and a hospital ship from detention centers. Malaysia characterizes the repatriation as voluntary, but the UN, human rights organizations, and civil society groups have raised serious concerns about the safety of returnees, citing Myanmar's ongoing civil war since 2021, risks of persecution, forced military conscription, and potential violence. Reports indicate the deportees include Rohingya Muslims and other ethnic minorities who fled Myanmar due to persecution. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees stated that current conditions in Myanmar do not support safe and sustainable returns. Malaysia has barred UN refugee agencies from screening or identifying returnees, and the exact composition of the first group—particularly the number of Rohingya—remains officially unclear. The Malaysian government has framed the repatriation as addressing public hostility toward the refugee population and financial burden, though critics argue detention center conditions may have coerced participation in the supposedly voluntary program.
