Summary

An Israeli airstrike on an apartment building in Gaza City's Remal neighborhood on October 3, 2026, killed five people, including a Christian mother, Maysa Abu Daoud, and her daughter Mary al-Najjar, according to health officials and church sources. Israel states it targeted Ali al-Amoudi, a senior Hamas leader, and claims to have taken steps to minimize civilian harm; Hamas denies accusations of rearming and violating the ceasefire, instead accusing Israel of undermining the peace deal. The strike caused a large fire and destroyed the building. The deaths have drawn condolences from Pope Leo XIV, the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, and the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem, with religious leaders calling for an end to the conflict. The incident occurred amid ongoing tensions over ceasefire implementation, with both sides accusing each other of violations. Casualty figures from Gaza health officials since the October 2025 ceasefire range from 1,400 to 1,441 Palestinians killed by Israeli fire.
