Indonesian students protest government's handling of wildfires and shrinking civic space

Summary

Thousands of students and civil society groups protested across Indonesia on October 28-29, 2026, demanding the government declare the ongoing wildfires in Sumatra and Kalimantan a national disaster and criticizing President Prabowo Subianto's policies on economic hardship, corruption, and civic freedoms. The protests, organized by the #IndonesiaSadar coalition and held on Youth Pledge Day, took place primarily at Bundaran HI (Hotel Indonesia traffic circle) in Jakarta and in other cities including Bandung and Makassar. Demonstrators called for halting funding for populist programs and expressed anger over the toxic haze from fires described as Indonesia's worst in 11 years, exacerbated by El Niño conditions. The largely peaceful gatherings included some isolated clashes with police and security forces, which in some cases blocked protesters from reaching planned locations. The government acknowledged the demonstrations, stated it was prioritizing environmental and governance issues, and reported deploying over 70,000 firefighting personnel and taking legal action against companies linked to the fires.
