Indonesian students and civil society protest in Jakarta against Prabowo policies, wildfires, and corruption

Summary

Hundreds to thousands of Indonesian students and civil society groups demonstrated in Jakarta and other cities on October 28, 2026, against economic hardship, government corruption, and President Prabowo Subianto's handling of devastating forest fires. The protests, organized by the group SADAR and marked with the hashtag #IndonesiaAware, occurred amid Indonesia's worst wildfires in 11 years, exacerbated by El Niño conditions, which have caused toxic haze affecting public health and regional relations. Demonstrators demanded the government declare the fires a national disaster and cease funding populist programs such as free meal initiatives. Protesters carried signs with slogans like "Hungry? Eat the Rich!" and displayed the three-finger gesture from The Hunger Games. Security forces, including police and military personnel, maintained a heavy presence and blocked some groups from reaching planned locations such as the Hotel Indonesia roundabout, resulting in physical confrontations in some instances. The government acknowledged the concerns, stated it welcomed student input, and noted it had taken legal action against companies linked to the fires and provided assistance to affected regions.
