Summary

An ICE officer shot a man identified as Oscar Belgal, a 28-year-old Dominican national, during a targeted enforcement operation in the Bronx on October 8, 2026. Belgal was in a car with his 5-year-old son at the time; the child was unharmed. ICE officials stated the agents fired after Belgal accelerated toward them and resisted arrest, claiming they were unaware of the child's presence. Belgal sustained a neck wound and was hospitalized and detained. The Department of Homeland Security stated Belgal has ties to the Trinitarios gang and prior criminal convictions. Mayor Zohran Mamdani criticized ICE and called for an end to enforcement operations in the city, and disputed claims made by Homeland Security Secretary Mullin about his response to the incident. Protesters gathered at the hospital and scene demanding justice. The NYPD confirmed they were not involved in the shooting. Reports differ on some details: one states two ICE agents were also injured; another indicates the victim may not have been the person agents were initially searching for. The exact circumstances of the shooting remain disputed.
