Summary

An ICE agent shot and wounded 28-year-old Oscar Belgal, a Dominican national in the US illegally with a criminal history and alleged gang affiliations, during an enforcement operation in the Bronx on October 8, 2026. A 5-year-old child was in the backseat of Belgal's vehicle and was unharmed. ICE officials claim Belgal accelerated his car toward agents and they fired in self-defense; Belgal's supporters and some officials dispute this account. The NYPD has not confirmed the shooting circumstances. Two ICE agents were injured during the encounter. Belgal was shot in the neck, survived, and was taken into custody. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul condemned the shooting and called for an independent investigation and halt to ICE operations in the city. Protesters gathered at the hospital where Belgal was treated. A federal judge blocked his deportation and restricted his movement to certain court districts. Congressional candidates and officials have called for his release, while others have demanded accountability and body camera footage.
