Summary

An ICE officer shot a man during a targeted enforcement operation in the Marble Hill neighborhood of the Bronx on October 8, 2026. The man, identified as Oscar Belgal, a 28-year-old from the Dominican Republic with prior criminal convictions, was shot in the neck and hospitalized in stable condition. A 5-year-old child in the vehicle was unharmed. Reports indicate two federal agents were also injured during the encounter. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Argus cameras captured Belgal in the driver's seat of a gray Honda CR-V. However, New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams denied the incident occurred. The shooting sparked protests outside the hospital and calls from Mayor Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul for an end to ICE operations in the city and release of body camera footage. The Department of Homeland Security characterized the operation as targeting a criminal with a history of arrests, while local officials condemned the incident and called for an independent investigation.
