Summary

Five British nationals in their 20s from London were arrested near RAF Fairford, a U.S.-operated air force base in Gloucestershire, on suspicion of explosives offences and terrorism after a resident reported three vans and masked men near the base early Sunday morning. Armed police established road blocks and security checks around the airbase. A resident witnessed a fireball burst from the rear of one of the vans. No explosive devices were found in the vans when searched, though a quantity of petrol was recovered. The five suspects were released on police bail. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested the plot involved "a foreign actor," and multiple reports and UK officials including Prime Minister Andy Burnham have speculated about a possible Iranian connection. However, Iran's London embassy and Iranian authorities have categorically rejected and strongly condemned these claims as unfounded and malicious speculation. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities also considering possible links to Russia or non-state-backed militant groups.
