Summary

A barge carrying 540 metric tonnes of methanol departed from Bogibeel Terminal in Dibrugarh, Assam, on October 5, 2026, bound for Pangaon Port in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The vessel, DLB Patkai, was flagged off by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma joining virtually. This marks the first international cargo shipment from upper Assam to a foreign port since India's independence in 1947. The methanol is produced by state-owned Assam Petro-Chemicals Limited at Namrup. The voyage, covering approximately 1,300 kilometres via the Brahmaputra River and the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route, is being observed as a test of whether the river can serve as a commercially viable freight corridor linking India's Northeast to overseas markets. The shipment was facilitated by the recent establishment of customs and immigration complexes at Bogibeel and Dhubri. Regular methanol shipments to Bangladesh are planned, reviving a historic river trade route that had been closed since Partition in 1947.
