Summary

Residents of the Russian-occupied Ukrainian town of Oleshky were evacuated to Belarus as part of a rescue operation during a ceasefire in the Kherson region, according to Ukrainian officials and international reports. The truce, which began Tuesday at 3am and was scheduled to last through Sunday evening, was facilitated with assistance from US first lady Melania Trump. Four aircraft carrying evacuees arrived in the Belarusian city of Gomel or Homel, with approximately 2,000 people remaining in Oleshky offered choices to relocate to Ukrainian-controlled territory, Russian-held areas, or stay in the city with restocked food and medical supplies. Those choosing to return to Ukrainian control were transported through the Russian city of Anapa before being flown to Belarus. Ukrainian officials stated evacuees would reach Ukrainian territory within hours. The Kremlin and some Ukrainian officials have not confirmed these accounts. Humanitarian aid and evacuations continued to be administered in Oleshky, and residents expressed satisfaction that corpses and garbage had been removed from the area.
