Summary

Two commercial vessels, the Alfa Watan and the Able, were struck by drones in Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea on October 6. The Alfa Watan sank following an onboard explosion and now lies at an estimated depth of around 2,000 meters; the Able caught fire. A total of 18 crew members were rescued from the two vessels, with two suffering serious injuries. Bulgarian authorities, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, and other officials stated the drones were Russian maritime and aerial drones, describing the incident as part of Russia's campaign against shipping in the region. However, the Russian Embassy in Sofia and Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev denied Russian responsibility, with Radev stating the origin of the drones had not been established. Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov observed that the strike came from an underwater drone but did not confirm the overall claim. The incident raised concerns about maritime security in NATO waters and prompted condemnation from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
