Container ship Contship Jet sinks after drone attack off Bulgaria

Summary

The Contship Jet, a container vessel registered in Liberia and chartered to Israeli firm ZIM Integrated Shipping Services, sank in the Black Sea off Bulgaria's coast after being struck by three sea drones. The attack occurred approximately 17-21 nautical miles from the Bulgarian coast, within Bulgaria's Exclusive Economic Zone. All 18 crew members (14 Filipinos and 4 Ukrainians) were rescued and transferred to Varna. The ship was carrying 421 containers including lithium-ion batteries, corrosive liquids, acids, and industrial components en route from Haifa, Israel to Constanța, Romania. Video footage showed a sea drone driving alongside the vessel before turning towards its hull. Navy teams reported no signs of pollution. The identity of the attackers remains unclear, though some attacks in the region appear to benefit Russia according to Bulgarian officials. The incident has raised concerns about the impact of Russia's war in Ukraine on commercial shipping in the Black Sea. Admiral Emil Eftimov has not confirmed the attack occurred.
