Cockroach Janta Party claims police detained thousands during Delhi protest against Chief Election Commissioner

Summary

The Cockroach Janta Party called for a protest at Jantar Mantar on October 10, 2026, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged electoral irregularities and voter list manipulation. According to multiple reports and protest organizers, Delhi Police detained over 1,000 to 7,000 protesters during the demonstration, including party leaders, opposition politicians, and civil society members. Protesters threw stones at security personnel. The Government of India and the Bharatiya Janata Party denied allegations of electoral malpractices. India's Permanent Mission to the UN rejected concerns raised by the UN Human Rights office over the detentions, describing them as an unwarranted interference in internal affairs and asserting that the right to peaceful assembly is protected by India's Constitution and democratic institutions. The Supreme Court heard challenges to restrictions imposed in connection with the protest. Jantar Mantar remained officially open to visitors during this period.
