Summary
A Chinese fishing boat identified as part of Beijing's maritime militia, the Minfudingyu 07902, was spotted operating alongside a Chinese coast guard cutter and a research vessel off Taiwan's eastern coast in mid-August, according to surveillance reports. Taiwan's defense ministry stated this was the first known sighting of such a craft in the area and characterized the operation as China using law enforcement and scientific research as cover for harassment, seeking to expand operations and create an illusion of de facto jurisdiction. Taiwan's military tracked the activity using reconnaissance tools in coordination with other agencies including its coast guard.
