Summary

China and Laos have established a joint military training and support facility at Ban Keun Airport, located approximately 45 kilometers north of Vientiane. The facility, formally opened on September 29, 2026, is intended to support training for Laotian air force pilots and represents an expansion of China's overseas military presence in mainland Southeast Asia. Satellite imagery shows the presence of light attack aircraft and military support vehicles at the site. The facility is jointly maintained and operated by both countries and includes the China-Laos Friendship Aviation Academy. China's Defense Ministry stated the center is not directed against any third party and aims to deepen military cooperation and contribute to regional peace and stability. The development has drawn attention from neighboring countries, particularly Vietnam and Thailand, due to its strategic implications, though some analysts note that Laos's landlocked geography may limit the facility's military utility.
