Summary

Chinese construction of a runway on Antelope Reef in the Paracel Islands is underway, with analysts estimating completion by mid-2027. Satellite imagery shows grading work, gravel and concrete piles, and compaction cranes in operation. Analysts assess the completed base would be China's most significant military expansion in the South China Sea in a decade, extending the reach of Chinese naval ships and military aircraft. State media claim the facility will serve civilian purposes including weather forecasting and maritime and scientific research, while China has not publicly acknowledged the military base construction. The project is expected to strengthen Beijing's military control over the disputed region.
