Summary

During a naval training exercise in Kazakhstan's Mangystau region on September 24, 2026, servicemen were swept into the Caspian Sea due to sudden weather deterioration and strong winds while disembarking from a vessel in shallow water. Casualty figures vary across reports: nine deaths were initially confirmed with seven missing, but later reports indicate 14 servicemen died and three were rescued. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev declared September 25 a national day of mourning and ordered an investigation. A government commission was established to examine the circumstances. Five high-ranking defense officials were detained on allegations of criminal negligence, including failure to implement safety protocols despite worsening weather conditions. The defense minister was subsequently dismissed. Search and rescue operations involved divers and helicopters.
